History and Makeup
Welcome to the home page of the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists, the state board tasked with establishing the qualifications for licensure and renewal, as well as the ethical standards for the practice of psychology by psychologists, psychological associates, and licensed specialists in school psychology in Texas.
The Board was established by the 61st Legislature in 1969 and was consolidated under the Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council pursuant to H.B. 1501 (86th Leg.) in 2019. The Psychologists’ Licensing Act, the Board’s enabling legislation, can be found in Chapter 501 of the Occupations Code and is both a title and practice act.
The Board consists of nine members appointed by the governor with the advice and consent of the senate. Four of the members must be psychologists, two must be psychological associates, and three must be members who represent the public. One of the psychologist or psychological associate members must also be a licensed specialist in school psychology.
Board Mission and Philosophy
The Board’s mission is to protect and promote the welfare of the people of Texas by ensuring that the practice of psychology is provided by qualified and competent practitioners. The Board accomplishes this goal by establishing the qualifications for licensure and renewal, as well as the ethical standards for the practice of psychology in Texas. .
This mission is derived from Chapter 501 of the Occupations Code and supersedes the interest of any individual or special interest group.
